  11.                    A New USBBS Team Member
  12.  
  13. Well, not really, but...  On January 27, 1995, my wife, Madeline,
  14. gave birth to our first child -- a girl named Dalen Elizabeth.  As
  15. those of you know who have children, this has greatly reduced the
  16. time that I have to spend on the USBBS list.  As we get to know
  17. our daughter better, we will settle into a routine.  Until that
  18. time, please bear with me.  The list is done in my spare time and
  19. I have less of that now!

  22.                         FIDO ACCESS

  24. Mark Robbins of Second Sanctum in Dallas/Ft. Worth has
  25. volunteered to be the FIDO distribution point.  Mark also
  26. produces the original Dallas/Ft. Worth BBS list.  Here is the
  27. information:

  31.   The USBBS List is distributed over FIDO FILEBONE name

  38. USBBS List, I'd like to list it here.  Please send me a (registered)
  39. copy of your product to I can check it out.  I will list it here
  40. so the thousands of BBSer's who use the USBBS List can know that
  41. you support the list.

  75. Version 1.03 corrects an error in the address in version 1.02.
  76. I have also reflected that the "F" modem setting includes both
  77. V.Fast and V.34.

  80.                    LIST KEEPERS TAKE NOTE
  81.  
  82. Recently, I have been considering ways to make the USBBS list more
  83. accurate and easy to update.  I know that there are thousands of
  84. BBS lists being kept out there.  Many of the local list keepers
  85. verify BBS's continued existence.  Something that I feel is one
  86. of the shortcomings of any list.
  87.  
  88. The proposal is to create an easy way for listkeepers to reformat
  89. their lists for submission to the USBBS national BBS list each
  90. month.  This has the advantage of gaining national exposure for
  91. the boards on the list and gives our national readers exposure
  92. to more BBS systems.
  93.  
  94. The boards on the list would have to meet the minimum requirements
  95. for posting to USBBS.  Thus, the listkeeper would have to collect
  96. the basic information, at a minimum.  This information includes:
  97.  
  98.     - Phone number including area code
  99.     - City, State
  100.     - Sysop's REAL Name
  101.     - BBS Software
  102.     - Modem Speed and type
  103.     - BBS Name
  104.     - Disk Space devoted to the BBS
  105.     - Number of nodes (phone lines)
  106.  
  107. I would provide, as my part of the process, a free formatting
  108. program which would format from a text version of the local list
  109. to the submission format for USBBS.  The edition field on the USBBS
  110. list would contain an indication of the source list from which
  111. the information was taken.  A list of listkeepers would be
  112. provided along with the other information in the USBBSxxx.ZIP.
  113.  
  114. More details would have to be worked out, but, I think this idea
  115. has some potential -- especially in getting BBS's deleted from
  116. the list when they are down.  Tell me what you think.
  117.  
  118. As you can see from edition 129, I have made arrangements with
  119. the first of the local listkeepers.  This listkeeper decided to
  120. format the entries since he already had the software to do so.

  125.                   USBBS DOWNLOADS AT BOBSBBS
  126.  
  127. BOBsBBS supports a set of special ID's which are for downloading
  128. the USBBS list ONLY.  Here they are:
  129.

  132. USBBS YMODEM        Ymodem
  133. USBBS XMODEM        Xmodem-Checksum
  134. USBBS CRC           Xmodem-CRC

  137. These ID's have no passwords and go through a special script
  138. which starts the download immediately after logon.  To help
  139. you automate your downloads, here are the phrases to wait
  140. for and the responses to enter:
  141.  
  142. WAIT FOR                      ENTER
  143. Graphics                      <Enter>
  144. LAST name                     {id};;
  145. Protocol starts immediately   start protocol download
  146.                               
  147. Wait approximately 1 second after detecting each phrase.
  148.  
  149. Notice that there is a set of two semi-colons (";;") after
  150. the {id}.  This by-passes the password prompt.  You MUST
  151. enter this or you will get the "PASSWORD" prompt.  For
  152. example, you would enter "USBBS ZMODEM;;" in response to the
  153. "LAST name" prompt.

  155. The connection is terminated immediately after the download
  156. is completed.

  160.              SOME THOUGHTS FOR THE FUTURE
  161.  
  162. The following are some thoughts about the USBBS National BBS
  163. list.  It has been around for a long time in about the same
  164. format.  But the BBSing and communications worlds are
  165. changing rapidly and the list must keep up with those
  166. changes.
  167.

  172. Expiration of BBS's on USBBS
  173.  
  174. One of the major problems I have with the list is finding out when
  175. boards go out of existence.  They do this quite often and without
  176. notice.
  177.  
  178. I am seriously considering expiring boards which have not been
  179. updated within 6 months.  What are your thoughts?
  180.  
  181. ----------------------------------------------------------------
  182.                    RELEASE SCHEDULE
  183.  
  184. This is a release schedule for USBBS for the next several
  185. months.  The list is released on the last weekend of the 
  186. month, unless there is some reason to revise this schedule.
  187. Here are a couple of known exceptions:
  188.  
  189. - If the first of the next month is on a weekend, the list
  190.   is released on that weekend.
  191. - If the last weekend of the month is a holiday weekend, the
  192.   list distribution will be adjusted.
  193. - If I will be out of town or otherwise occupied on the release
  194.   weekend, the list distribution will be adjusted.
  195.  
  196. The list is usually available sometime on the Sunday of the
  197. release weekend.  If you want to avoid long distance calls, I'd
  198. suggest that you call Sunday after 6p, Pacific Time.
  199.  
  200. All revisions for the list should be in by the Monday before 
  201. the release date to help assure that I get them and add them
  202. to the list.  Although some parts of this effort are automated,
  203. much is manual.  I cannot guarantee that I will be able to get
  204. revisions received after Monday into the next list edition.
  205.  
  206. PLEASE NOTE:  Because I do this for free, I reserve the

  208. distribution are posted on BOBsBBS (916-929-7511).  Sorry
  209. for any inconvenience this causes.

  211. SYSOPS, please note:  I sometimes have difficulty reaching
  212. the remote update points before the release date.  If the
  213. board is down or constantly busy, I may not be able to
  214. collect the information before the update for that month.
  215. Call BOBsBBS (916-929-7511) to be assured that your update
  216. will be considered for the next edition of the list.
